I welcome the curious, the novices, and the experienced family historians, to form a group where we can learn from each other and enjoy sharing our experiences.
In a book published in 2009 for the S&G 20th anniversary, I found we then had 2 groups : Family History for Beginners, and Writing Your Family History. Since then worldwide interest in genealogy has grown significantly.
We will probably meet monthly from September, perhaps home-based depending on initial numbers. If you're interested, please contact David Newick by clicking his name above.
Suggested topics we can start with ……
- What are we hoping to find?
- More about your particular family name?
- Looking for a famous ancestor?
- Understand about life in your town or village in the past?
- Your DNA origins?
- We can look at the many free sources of information, such as census data, births, marriages, deaths, boat passenger lists, military records, wills, probates, photos, Wikipedia, Heraldry documents etc. Is it sensible to copy from other people’s family trees?
- We can share our experiences of how we document our discoveries, either on paper, or preprinted charts, or in computer packages such as FindMyPast, FamilySearch, Ancestry, MyHeritage, FamilyHistorian, etc.
- How can we backup our precious data, and transfer our data from one package to another? How to present it meaningfully to the next generations.
- We can share experiences of discovering unknown living cousins worldwide or locally.
- Members of the group might have a famous (or perhaps infamous) ancestor.
- Ancestors who had an unusual occupation.
- We may have a common ancestor within the group.
- Understand the health benefits of finding out about family history.
- Bring out the hidden detective/historian in you!
- How to use AI to help your research.
- Joining other national u3a online family history groups. I belong to a group focussing on records pre-1538. Other topics including “brick walls” in your own research can be covered.
We will agree each meeting what we will cover at the next meeting.
